Tribute Concert to the Jewish Composers of the "Great American Songbook"

The RICHIE ZELLON Trio

“Sample” 3 min clip

“The Great American Songbook” is the canon of the most important and influential American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century that have stood the test of time in their life and legacy. Often referred to as “American Standards”, the songs published during the Golden Age of this genre include those popular and enduring tunes from the 1920s to the 1950s that were created for Broadway theatre, musical theatre, and Hollywood musical film.

A noteworthy fact is that a great number of songs included in this canon were written by Jews!  That being said, this program is in essence a celebration of every Jewish American’s musical heritage. To that end, it features some of the best works of 16 renowned Jewish composers: Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein, Sammy Cahn, George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, Johnny Green, Oscar Hammerstein II, Lorenz Hart, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mandel, Richard Rodgers, Sigmund Romberg, Arthur Schwartz, Jule Styne, Kurt Weill, & Victor Young.

You may Download a sample of the Tribute Program here, featuring an excerpt of Richie Zellon’s musical background from the book “Jazz Jews” by Mike Gerber, as well as information on all the composers featured.
